1 killed, 8 wounded filmmaker crashed through Kolkata Bazaar

A vegetable seller died and eight others were injured after a car, allegedly drunk, crashed in a market in Thakurpukur in Kolkata. The police have arrested a television director Siddanta Das (35), and a woman has been taken into custody. Another woman, who was sitting on the back seat, fled from place after the accident.

Local media reports states that the accident occurred at around 9 am yesterday. Das, police said, South 24 was running back from Bakhat till Garhat in South Kolkata in Parganas. According to reports, Das and two women co-couples were returning from a party. On the way, Das lost control of the car and went into a road closed for renewal. The vehicle crashed through the rail and hit three two-wheelers and pedestrians. The police confirmed that the slave was intoxicated and four bottles of liquor were found in the vehicle. After the accident, Das allegedly tried to escape from the spot, but local residents stopped the vehicle, pulled it out and thrown it away.

Aminur Rahman (63), who was selling vegetables in the market, was rushed to the hospital with significant injuries. He later died. According to reports, while six of those injured have been discharged, the condition of Joyd Majumdar is critical.

Aminur’s nephew Manzoor Rahman said, “I stood on the road outside the market. Suddenly, I saw the car. It hit at least seven people, including a person on a scooter and two others on the bike.”

A police officer said, “The road is being repaired and it has been closed for traffic. Only vehicles belonging to the residents are allowed here. The car guard crashed via rail and went carelessly killing several people,” a police officer said.

The incident has so far put a spotlight on drunk driving, one of the major causes of road accidents and deaths. Despite the government’s efforts to spread awareness, the cases of drunk driving are being reported from across the country, warning people against driving under influence.
