Hyderabad:

At least 17 people, including eight children and five women, have died, this morning a heavy fire broke out in a building near the prestigious Charminer in Hyderabad. While the cause of the fire has not been confirmed yet, it is suspected that a short circuit may have led the tragedy.

An official of the fire department said that he received a call at around 6.30 am and reached the spot. Eleven fire engines fought the explosion and the injured were transferred to hospitals.

Union Minister Kishan Reddy said that the family affected in the fire lived above his shop in Gulzar House area. “I met family members. Such incidents are very sad. I am not accusing anyone, but police, municipal, fire and electricity departments should be strengthened. I was told that the firefighters did not have proper equipment in the beginning today. We should bring better technology in the coming days. I will try to get financial assistance for the central government and the Prime Minister.”

Chief Minister Revantha Reddy has shocked the incident and asked the authorities to pursue relief efforts and ensure the best treatment for the injured.

The area where the incident took place has a line of jewelery shops and is very close to the prestigious Charminer. Many of these shops in the region are more than a century old and shared cheek-by-jawli set-ups.

Telangana minister Ponam Prabhakar said that the bodies have been recovered and sent to hospitals and the state government will soon share complete information.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office said that he was “deeply suffering” from the loss of life in the fire. “Hyderabad, suffering from the loss of life in depth due to the tragedy of fire in Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured may recover soon. East-Gatiya of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF will be given to the next one of each deceased. The injured will be given Rs.”

Congress Rajya Sabha MP M Anil Kumar Yadav told NDTV that rescue work is still going on. “This is a very unfortunate incident. It is a market. I will appreciate firefighters and other departments and have tried their best. The fire has caught.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sneha Mehra said that there was only one entry point in the building. “Another entry point was created and the firefighters entered from there. Most of the people inside were unconscious,” he said. “These are old establishments with some new construction. Only a narrow route leads to the area where there was a fire.”
