Druk Padma Karpo School is located in the cold desert of Ladakh and is popularly known as “Rancho School”, finally it has received CBSE affiliation for more than two decades of establishment. The affiliation was given after several delays and rejects.
The school was associated with the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE) till now, after being portrayed for fame after being depicted in the Aamir Khan-Star film “3 Idiots” in 2009. The new National Education Policy (NEP) is known for its innovative methods of teaching, which proposes reforms to move away from the traditional “rot learning”, the school is now planning to expand to class 12.
“We have finally received CBSE affiliation after many years of delay and the first batch of class 10 students is now waiting for its CBSE board exam results.
The school’s principal Mingur Angmo told PTI, “Although we had all the necessary infrastructure, excellent results were focused on records and innovative methods of teaching and learning, but we did not get NOC from JKBOS despite many attempts in all these years.”
According to the affiliation norms of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), schools require ‘no objection certificate’ from the concerned state board. Foreign schools require equal documents from the respective embassy in the respective country or the consulate of India.
Ladakh has tried to approve the school before achieving the position of the Union Area.
“The infrastructure is already being expanded and we are planning to start class 11 and 12 by 2028. We are doing some training for the facility of a smooth infection for students for CBSE course for our teachers. Our teaching methods were different from traditional classroom teaching and CBSE will also improve its teaching even after NEP.
Even after the bilateral, many schools in Ladakh are affiliated to the Jammu and Kashmir Board.
A committee proposed the establishment of a new regional board in Ladakh, which aims to “meet the realistic needs of students according to the natural conditions of the region”.
The 24-year-old school is named after Mipham Pema Carpo (1527–1592), who is distinguished as a great scholar, while Padma Carpo means ‘White lotus’ in the dialect in local language.
The school is now tilted by tourists, making it ‘should go’ on the journey program. A wall of the school building was depicted in the closing scene of the Bollywood film, which tries to urinate a character, clever, but a electric shock because two children throw it on a light bulb attached to the wire from the first floor window.
While the ‘iconic idiotic wall’ – part of a building that was damaged in the 2010 flash flood – still lives in the campus, the first floor, which is previously made of bricks, has been replaced with wood structures, which is usually used in Ladakh.
The school decided to move the ‘Wall of Rancho’ in 2018 to ensure that students are not distracted by tourists.
“Now two areas are separated, students are not disturbed by tourists. However, many times tourists get to participate in some activities going on in school. Like yesterday, we made a fake election with the Election Commission here. The activity was done to give students the first experience of democratic process to vote from the formation of a government.
“So, if any such activity is going on, we sometimes allow visitors to appear or see,” Angmo explained.
“With CBSE affiliation, infection for higher education in the country and abroad will be easy for our students and we can set an example of traditional classroom learning combination with innovative and playing ways,” he said, “he said. Pti gjs gjs mnk mnk
