4 girls drowned by collecting soil from river in UP: Police

Pratapgarh:

Police said four minor girls, including three sisters, drowned in the Baklahi river on Thursday.

Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Sanjay Rai said that the incident took place in Chati Singh’s Purva village under Kunda police station area around 11 am.

Girls have been identified as Swati (13), Sandhya (11) and Chandni (6) – all sisters of Jalalpur Dihwa village – and their neighbors, Priyashi (7).

According to the police, the girls had gone to collect soil from the river so that their kitchens and walls could be done with mud, a traditional practice in rural homes.

Digging near the banks of the river, the girls allegedly entered the deep water and drowned.

Officials said other children at the site raised the alarm, after which the locals reached the spot and thrown out the girls, but by then, the four had died, the officials said.

Police said that the bodies have been sent for post -mortem examination.
