58 killed in heavy storms in Bihar, announced Rs 4 lakh

On Thursday, a powerful storm with heavy rainfall and lightning in several districts of Bihar claimed 58 lives in Nalanda district alone – 23 of them.

Among the total deadly people, 35 people died due to collapse of trees or walls, while 23 others lost their lives for electric attacks across the state.

Nalanda District Magistrate Shashank Shubhankar confirmed high mortality and important property damage in his district.

Talking to the media on Friday, Shri Shubhankar said that 22 people were killed by falling trees or collapsing walls, and one person was killed by lightning.

He said, “According to the instructions of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, all the affected families are being given compensation of Rs 4 lakhs. Most of them have already received compensation, and the remaining will be paid by Friday afternoon,” he said.

Three to four injured persons are undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital. The storm caused widespread destruction in Nalanda, severely damaged in many areas with homes and crops.

DM said, “Our assessment teams are surveying the affected areas. Compensation will be provided as per government rules. We have also recorded five livestock deaths, and post -mortem is being organized to process compensation claims. Injuries or deaths are also being reported among small animals.”

Infrastructure has taken a big hit in Nalanda, with more than 18 km of power lines damaged, over 300 electric poles uproot, and many transformers have been destroyed.

Shri Shubhankar said, “Thirty -two teams of the electricity department are working to restore the supply. Partial restoration has already been achieved, and the removal of trees from the roads is expected to be completed by evening.”

To prevent interruption in water supply, ten generators were deployed overnight, additional units were expected to come soon.

The District Magistrate also clarified that compensation is extended only for residential and personal damage, not for commercial losses.

He said, “The administration is working for a war to ensure that no affected person is leaving without assistance.”

Beyond Nalanda, Hurricane claimed five lives in Bhojpur, three in Gaya, and one -one Gopalganj, Arwal, Jehanbad, Patna and Muzaffarpur districts due to fall of trees or walls.

The 23 lightning-Related Deaths were Spread Across the State-Four in Siwan, Three in Jamui, Two Each in Saharsa, Araria, and Saran, and One Each in Patna, Jehanabad, BHOJPUR, DARBHAGA, Arwal, Darbhanga, Arwal, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Munger, Katihar, and Bhagalpur Districts.
