Officials said six people, including four women and a two -year -old child, were killed and four others were injured, after a slab of the upper floor of the four -storey building in Kalyan, on Tuesday afternoon, the cascading fell on the lower floors under cascading effect.
Kalyan Sub-Division Officer (SDO) Vishwas Gujar said that the incident took place during floor work on the fourth floor of 30-year-old Shri Saptasharing Building, with 52 families.
This building is located in the densely populated Mangalragho Nagar, Kalyan East.
The SDO told reporters, “Initially, the fourth floor slab collapsed, with a slab of all the latter lower floors in a cascading effect, to trap 11 inhabitants in the rubble,” the SDO told reporters.
After the collapse, teams of Fire Brigade, NDRF, and District Disaster Force reached the spot and started rescue operations.
Mr. Gujar confirmed that six people were killed while five others were rescued from the rubble; Four of them suffered injuries.
They were killed as Namasvi Srikanth Sheller (2), Praila Kalacharan Sahu (56), Sunita Nilanchal Sahu (38), Sushila Narayan Gujar (78), Venkat Bhim Chavan (42) and Sujata Manoj Vadadi (38).
The SDO said that clearance work is currently going on at the site.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the next families of each of the victims.
“The news of the collapse of the building in Kalyan caused deep pain, claiming six lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this difficult time,” Mr. Fadnavis says on X.
He assured that all necessary rescue and relief operations are being done by local authorities and disaster management teams on the basis of war.
According to officials, the remains of the affected building will soon be demolished as the fall of the slab has made it unsafe for the residence, and alternative arrangements are being made for the displaced families.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed immediate medical treatment for the injured and fast rescue operations.
Mr. Shinde said that if necessary, the families of the victims will get financial assistance from the District Disaster Relief Fund.
He also directed that the remaining residents of the building should be transferred to temporary shelters.
KDMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Harshal Gikawad told PTI that the building was about 30 years old, but it was not in the list of dangerous buildings.
“Incidentally, a day earlier the building was issued a structural audit notice,” he said, “he said.
KDMC said 513 buildings have been declared dangerous or most dangerous in its range.
The police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of collapse.
