The Supreme Court has set a three -month time limit for the Center to implement food security criteria which makes it mandatory to showcase important information about food items packed on containers. Hearing a public interest litigation, a bench of Justice JB Pardwala and Justice R. Mahadevan said that the Center would have to amend 2020 within three months in the rules of food security and standards (labeling and demonstrations).
Hearing the matter, Justice JB Pardiwala said, “All of you are grandchildren? Let the order come on the petition.
During the hearing, the Center attracted the attention of the court towards the affidavit filed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It said that the authorities have received 14,000 comments on new rules and have decided to amend the rules. The court settled the pilot after fixing a three -month time limit for the Center. The PIL had sought directions to the Center and the states to make the package warning label compulsory.
In June 2024, FSSAI approved a proposal to showcase nutritional information, including the major font size on the total sugar, salt and saturated fat in bold letters and packed foods.
Amendment in a government statement said, “It aims to strengthen consumers to better understand the nutritional value of the product that they are consuming.” Subsequently, the draft notification was placed in a public domain for suggestions and objections.
“Information about the contribution per service per cent (%) per service allowance (%) for recommended diet allowance (RDA) will be given in bold letters for total sugar, total saturated fat and sodium content. Regulation 2 (V) and FSS (Labelling and Performance) Regulation Regulation 2 (V) and 5 (3) Regulation, 2020 specify the requirements of service and nutritional information on the food product label Is.”
“Consumers create healthy options along with empowering consumers, will also contribute to efforts to combat the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and promote public health and well-being. Global efforts to deal with NCDs will help prioritize clear and distinction labeling requirements.
