Police said the granddaughter of Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi was allegedly shot by her husband in Gaya, Bihar on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when the victim, Sushma Devi, her child and sister Poonam Kumari were at home in Tetua village under Atri Block.
There was no immediate comment from Mr. Manjhi, who is an MP from Gaya Lok Sabha seat and a minister of micro, small and medium enterprises. He is also the founder of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (secular), a colleague of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar.
According to Poonam, there was a fight between Sushma and her husband Ramesh, later after returning home from work around 12 o’clock. It was during the fight that Ramesh allegedly took out a country-made pistol and fired at Poonam before fleeing from the spot.
Poonam and Sushma’s children, who were present in another room, moved towards the victim’s room, they found it lying in a pool of blood. He died on the spot.
“He came from Patna. We demand a death sentence for Ramesh. He should be hanged to kill my sister. My sister is no more,” he said.
Local residents also went to the house after hearing the sound of gunfire.
Sushma served as a “Vikas Mitra” – a person who serves as a link between the development initiative for the state government and society under the Bihar Mahadalait Development Mission – while Ramesh drives a truck in Patna.
Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anand Kumar said that a special team has been formed to locate the accused.
“A forensic team and technical experts have been sent to the crime site to collect evidence. Further investigation is going on,” he said.
Sources said that Sushma and Ramesh belong to different castes and got married 14 years ago.
