Apple uses a 3D facial recognition system known as face ID for safe authentication in its iPhone model. This face ID embedded within the display cutout has set a long benchmark for smartphone facial recognition. So far, most Android manufacturers have so far matched it with comparable and widely adopted options. Now, a new leak from China shows that some Android smartphone companies are searching for similar 3D solutions for their upcoming equipment. Honor’s latest magic 7 Pro already provides a face unlock feature that employs a system similar to Apple’s face ID.
Under-display 3d face recognition technology in test phase
Tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo Claimed that many Chinese smartphone manufacturer Under-display 3D facial recognition technology in domestic laboratories is testing. While the name or brand names of the product are not disclosed, the post indicates to increase interest in integrating upgraded biometric solutions directly under the display. This may allow smartphone manufacturers to offer safe face unlock without visible camera cutouts with advanced biometrics.
The comment section of the post shows that some users doubt about adopting under-screen cameras and 3D face recognition. They suggest that they can take more space and increase the cost of handsets.
Apple’s iPhone model has maintained the face ID feature for almost a decade. 3D face recognition is considered safe and reliable to unlock the phone and certify payment. Currently, similar systems are available on selected Android devices from brands such as Honor and ZTE.
Honor’s recent flagship Magic 7 Pro offers 3D face unlock similar to Apple’s face ID. It claims a central tablet-sized cutout on top of the screen housing 50-megapixel selfie camera and 3D depth camera. The 3D face unlock feature is claimed to work even in the dark.
Honor’s Magic 6 Pro also has a 3D facial recognition system. Meanwhile, ZTE’s Nubia Z70s Ultra has an under-display (UD) selfie camera, but it does not offer 3D face scanning.
