Omnivision Ov50X 1-Inch Camera Sensor 8K HDR Launched with Video Recording Support

Omnivision Ov50X was recently unveiled as the company’s latest camera sensor for the flagship smartphone. It is the successor of the OV50H sensor which was introduced in 2023. The new 1-inch sensor uses the thiecle technology of omnivisation, which works with the lateral overflow integration capacitor (LOFIC) of the sensor to offer better image quality in more challenging landscapes. Omnivision claims that the new OV50X CMOS sensor can give “movie-grade video capture” with 8k HDR video recording support on high-end phone.

The new Omnivision Ov50X sensor is a 1-inch camera sensor that measures 13.1×9.8 mm with 50-megapixel resolution. The 1.6-Micron (micron) pixel size is also more than the 1.2µm pixel of its predecessor. The firm also claims that the sensor is capable of delivering closer to the “100DB” single-exposure HDR for image capture, using its thiyalecle technology.

According to the company, the OV50X camera sensor supports four-cell pixel binnings for low light scenarios, meaning that devices can capture 12.5-megapixel images up to 180fps. When three-channel HDR of the sensor is used, FPS falls on 60fps.

Omnivision has postponed the better video recording performance of the Ov50X sensor, claiming that it can capture 8K video with autofocus with an in-sensor crop zoom and dual analog gains (DAG) HDR as well as quad phase detection. This allows it to bypass the requirement of 35-megapixels for 8K video recording.

The company also revealed a sample showing better dynamic range and signal-to-show ratio (SNR) introduced by the new OV50X camera sensor. However, we will have to wait to see more real -world camera samples to see how much the Omnivision jumps above the Ov50x Ov50H, and how it happens against Ccompetition.
