CBI director Praveen Sood gets one year expansion

The Center on Wednesday extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood to a year.

Mr. Sood took over as CBI Director on May 25, 2023 for a two -year term.

Officials said that the decision to extend his tenure was taken in the meeting of the selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna and the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday.

Based on the recommendations of the selection committee, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the expansion of Sood for a period of one year beyond May 24.

Mr. Sood is a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) Karnataka cadre officer. He was working as Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka, when he was named as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Born in 1964 in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Mr. Sood joined the IPS at the age of 22, who was 22 years old after completing his civil engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

He has also received a post-graduation degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and Maxwell School of Governance, Syrakuse University in New York.

Mr. Sood is known for approach to his hands, examined high-profile individuals and high profile cases related to inter-state and international influence cases.

The tech-service officer worked with the judiciary to strengthen CCTN (crime and criminal tracking networks) and ICJS (Interopeable Criminal Justice System) in Karnataka.
