New Delhi:
The Adani Group has deployed India’s first hydrogen-operated truck for mining logistics in Chhattisgarh, which can carry 40 tonnes of cargo in a 200 km range, said on Saturday.
Group’s leading company Adani Enterprises flagged off hydrogen fuel cell trucks, as it appears to promote cleaner transport.
“These hydrogen-managed trucks will gradually replace diesel vehicles used in the company’s logistics operations,” the firm said in a statement.
“In collaboration with an Indian and International Energy Technology firm and a leading auto manufacturer, the hydrogen fuel cell is developing battery-operated trucks to transport the cargo. Each truck can carry up to 40 tons in a 200-kilometer range, each truck, smart technology and three hydrogen tanks. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai flagged off the first truck in Raipur.
It will be used to transport coal from Gare Pelma III block to state power plant.
“The launch of India’s first hydrogen-operated truck in Chhattisgarh reflects the state’s commitment to stability. Such an initiative will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and set a new standard for the industry. Chhattisgarh is not only at the forefront of fulfilling the power demands of the country, but also gives an example in adopting sustainable practice.”
The state -owned Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited has appointed Adani Enterprises for Gare Pelma III block as mine developer and operator through a competitive bidding process.
“The initiative for hydrogen-operated trucks is an important step towards the decarbonation of the Adani Group and commitment to the responsible mining. We are creating models with minimal environmental impacts by incorporating autonomous dose push technologies, solar power, digital initiatives and tree transplant to transfer trees.
“We aim to ensure cheap and reliable electricity for all, while leading new standards in permanent mining practices,” said Vinay Prakash, CEO – Natural Resources and Director, Adani Enterprises.
The project is a joint effort between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL). Both institutions are part of Adani Enterprises. AnR will source hydrogen cells from Anil, which is also involved in green hydrogen, wind turbines, solar modules and batteries.
Hydrogen, the most abundant element, does not make any harmful emissions.
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle matches diesel trucks in range and load capacity, but only emit water vapor and hot air with minimal noise.
Since mining mainly uses diesel-powered machinery, switching to cleaner fuel will reduce emissions and noise. It will also help in reducing India’s oil imports and carbon footprints.
The statement said that Adani Natural Resource is the first in Asia to deploy the dose push semi-late technology, increases safety and stability.
The ANR produces and processes coal, minerals and metals for industries and final users. It has a diverse commercial portfolio including integrated resource management, iron ores, copper, aluminum, minerals, bunkering, liquid petroleum gas and rock phosphate.
