Guwahati:
India has adopted a new “push back” strategy to deal with Bangladesh infiltration, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday told reporters.
Addressing a press conference, Ms. Sarma said that the Center has deported illegal migrants, including Rohingya, which is one of the largest facilities in the country to keep illegal migrants from different parts of the country, including the Matia Detection Center in Golpara.
“We have pushed them back. Everyone has gone back to Bangladesh from the Detention Center, except for those who are in Matia, where there is litigation,” he said, he said, they do not have an exact number of illegal immigrants that have been deported.

There are only 30-40 people left at the Matia Detention Center, he said.
In early 2025, there were 270 prisoners in Matia, 133 were declared “foreigners” by Assam’s foreigners.
Calling across the border an infiltration a “big issue”, Mr. Sarma said that it would be minimized due to the new “push back” incident.
“Earlier, we used to arrest 1,000-1,500 foreigners. We used to arrest them, and they were sent to jails, and then they will be produced before a law court. Now, we have decided that we will not bring them to our country, and push them back,” he said.
He also said that the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam was being actively monitored, and there has been no unnatural activity in the last 10 days.
“The central government, however, will be in a better position to explain because they have a separate mechanism to find it,” said Mr. Sarma.
