Gravy restaurants do not have a right, Kerala Consumer Court has ruled: owner

Kochi:

The owner of a restaurant in Kochi, Kerala, breathed a sigh of relief as a local consumer court here, stating that the gravy should not be given to customers for free.

The legal battle began when in November last year, a person ordered Parota and beef – one of the most popular recipes in the state available in most restaurants – in a restaurant here.

As the footer made of maida is flaky, many people like to keep gravy with it to make it soft and enhance its taste.

In most places, restaurants and hotels also offer gravy when the order of beef dish is dry.

In some places, the given gravy is prepared with the base of the onion, while in some other places, the beef dish is prepared as a curry.

Recalling the incident, which led to a long legal battle, the owner of the ‘Persian Table’ restaurant said that the person who initially ordered the parotta and beef did not ask for the gravy.

“Later, he said that he also wanted gravy. We said that we usually do not provide gravy, but if the order is for beef with gravy, we provide it. They started a argument, and we clarified their stand. Unhappy with our stand, he said,” The owner of the restaurant said.

The owner said, “We later realized that they had filed a complaint with local authorities, and they also came to inspect us. With nothing, they then filed a petition before the consumer court.”

“The decision has now come, and we are happy that the court understood our logical arguments why we were not able to provide free gravy. We incite a heavy monthly salary bill, and if we are to give the gravy for free, it will spend more and it would not be a viable enterprise,” the restaurant owner expressed his happiness that the court insisted on their favor.

With this new decision, gravy cannot be demanded as an authority for those arriving at hotels and restaurants.
