Protests were held in the pockets of various Muslims of Manipur today against the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament. More than 5,000 people participated in a rally held in National Highway No. 102 in Lillong area of Thubal district.
Paramilitary and additional forces were taken to the location where security forces are already present to maintain law and order.
The rally was allowed to protect Lillong Horebi tightly by security forces through Alia Madrasah region.
Lillong is the region that has the largest population of Muslims in the entire state.
After the afternoon prayer, a symbolic protest was held in separate Muslim pockets, where people raised slogans and organized the festival.
Security forces have been deployed in various Muslim areas since morning, which has been declared by the members of the community, it is an attempt to demolish them and stop them from expressing any form of democratic opposition.
Some pockets were reported to have a minor scuffle between security forces and protesters.
In Thuge’s Irong Chesaba, there were scaffolds between security forces and protesters in the morning, as security forces try to stop a rally from moving forward. There has been no untoward incident so far.
Social activist and community leader Sakir Ahmed, while attending the rally, said that the Waqf Amendment Bill is against the ethos of the Indian Constitution as it is completely unacceptable for the community.
Symbolic protests have also been told that in Imphal East, Kashara Avang Leicai, Kiyarung Muslim and Kiamgei Muslim region and others in Bishanupur district have also been reported.
