Apple’s iPhone 17 series is expected to be the company’s first smartphone lineup, which features 120Hz display on all models. The company has reserved displays with high refresh rates (branded as promotion) on its iPhone Pro model since 2021, using a slow 60Hz screen on standard iPhone models. This year, the base iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air are rumored to come up with the upgraded 120Hz display, but a new leak from China states that only part of this information is accurate.

DSCC analyst Ross Young had earlier claimed that Apple would introduce promotion display in the entire iPhone 17 lineup for the first time this year. Many leaks from various sources have indicated continuously on a display upgrade for Vanilla iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air.
Apple’s promotion display is exclusive to Pro model as it started on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max model. It improves screen lubrication and accountability, provides an enlarged experience during scrolling and gaming.
Last year’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus features OLED screen with 60Hz refresh rate displays. The iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, on the contrary, have an oled screen with 120Hz refresh rate (promotion). Apple used the same strategy in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 lineups.
The promotional display can reach 120Hz and may dynamically reduce 1Hz to preserve the battery during low-speed functions. This variable refresh rate also makes features like Always-on display in the iPhone Pro model.
The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air is expected to debut at the Apple Launch event in September, with the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Standard iPhone 17 has been tipped to run on the A18 chip. The iPhone 17 Air is called equipped with the A19 chip, while the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max are asked to run on the A19 Pro Chip.
