A village in Kanpur district has gone into mourning after one of its residents, a businessman who had married in February, killed in a terrorist attack in Pahgam, Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
Residents of several nearby villages gathered outside Shubam Dwivedi’s house in Hatpur in Maharajpur area to condemn the death of a 31-year-old.
Kanpur Police Commissioner and District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh also reached the village, met Dwivedi’s family and assured that the Uttar Pradesh government would help him in every possible way. He also told the family that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had expressed his deep condolences.
Singh told the news agency PTI, “I received a call from the Chief Minister who took details of the victim and his family. The Chief Minister instructed me to visit the ancestral village of the victim in this hour of grief. We have been directed to ensure that the family gets all possible supports.”
He said, “Although no word is enough in this hour of sorrow, I have assured the family that the Chief Minister and the district administration are taking all the steps to bring back the body of Shubam to Kanpur,” he said.
Dwivedi, who married on February 12, was among 26 people, who were killed by terrorists in the picturesque mountain grassland of Basaron near Pahgam, in one of the worst attacks on citizens in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.
Dwivedi went to Kashmir with his wife and nine other family members last week and was scheduled to return on Wednesday.
Shubam’s uncle Manoj Dwivedi told PTI that his nephew and his wife had decided to ride on Tuesday afternoon when the terrorists approached him. He tried to know his identity before shooting Shubam in the head, killing him in front of his wife.
Home Minister Amit Shah reached Srinagar on Tuesday evening, held a review meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant General Manoj Sinha, and also visited Pahgam on Wednesday.
A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on security is expected to be held on Wednesday evening.
