A part of the roof collapses at Delhi Airport after heavy rains

A part of the roof in Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, one of India’s busiest, collapsed on Sunday in the early hours of heavy thunderstorms and rain, shows a video.

Pictures and videos have shown that an extension section of the overhang outside the airport collided on the pavement, which faced water everywhere.

49 flights, including 17 international people, were diverted to the Delhi Airport due to heavy rains and thunderstorms, who surpassed the national capital overnight.

“Delhi experienced a thunderstorm with heavy rains during the night of May 24. The city recorded the wind speed with more than 80 mm of rain, touching 70–80 km/h within 30 to 45 minutes and 30 to 45 minutes around 2:00 pm.

The statement said, “To prevent a part of the natural reaction of the design for extreme conditions and to prevent excessive water retention, a section of external tensile fabric in the T1 arrival forecourt has been adjusted under pressure, which helps in water spread. Other parts of the terminal had no structural agreement or effect.”

The Meteorological Department of India (IMD) said that the city’s primary weather station recorded winds up to 82 kmph in six hours and 81.2 mm of rain – between 11.30 am and 5.30 pm on Sunday.

The airport underlined that fast action was taken by the ground teams to restore normal conditions, ensuring the continuity of safety and operation with minimal disruption.

After heavy rains, serious waterlogging was observed in many parts of the city. Traffic rush and slow vehicle movement from many areas were also reported.

The scene of Delhi’s Minto Road showed a car submerged due to a serious waterfall.

Earlier on Wednesday, a cloud mass entered North Delhi and moved towards the south-south-east, causing dust storms and strong winds.

The winds blew at a speed of 50–60 km per hour, which grows at a speed of 70 kmph, as well as light rain. After the intense dust storm, electricity disruptions were reported in many areas in the capital, followed by thunderstorms, jai and rain in some parts of Delhi.
