The Amravati project faced a delay after a change in the 2019 YSR Congress party.

Prime Minister Modi is laying the foundation for projects worth Rs 58,000 crore.

Chandrababu Naidu’s return promised fresh attention and development for Amravati.

Amravati:

Amravati was once the rich capital of the ancient Satavhana dynasty and was famous for her Buddhist heritage. Nearly 1,800 years later, it proceeds to revive it as a capital, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi the foundation stone for thousands of crores of projects in full swing.

A decade ago, the idea of reviving Amravati as the new capital emerged as a result of the formation of Telangana and the loss of Hyderabad, resulting in the formation of Telangana. Today, after years of delay and political upheaval, the project is being renewed again with central and state support.

PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 58,000 crore. Of this, Rs 49,000 crore has been set for 74 major infrastructure projects in Amravati, including residence for Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Secretariat, High Court and Judicial Officers.

That was the vision

Amravati was re -conceived as the capital of Greenfield of Andhra Pradesh, which was first done by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s previous government in 2014. Going to Telangana during bipolar with Hyderabad, Mr. Naidu proposed Amravati as a future capital between Vijayawada and Guntur.

The previous Naidu government had deposited more than 33,000 acres of fertile agricultural land from about 30,000 farmers in 29 villages. In turn, farmers were promised to develop monetary gains and long-term prosperity as well as after land plots.

Then, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) took power in 2019 under the leadership of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, and the Amravati project came to a stop. The new government questioned the stability and ecological results of putting state resources in one region. It proposed a controversial three-priest scheme, in which Amravati made a quantity as Visakhapatnam Executive Hub, and for the judiciary. This vision threw the future of Amravati into uncertainty and provoked widespread protests, especially from farmers who left the ground in good faith.

Legal challenges

The project was five years old between 2019 and 2024. The farmers filed a legal petition, held rallies, and formed groups like Amravati Parikarashana Committee to demand continuity of the original plan. Partially built buildings and abandoned plots became the image of Amravati.

Major public infrastructure projects were stalled or given shelter. International collaborations including Singapore and Japanese firms have reduced or scored operations.

The state was in debt, limiting its ability to fund large scale projects like Amravati. The 2023 report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) raised questions about expenditure pattern, anomalies in land allocation and cost in capital work. By 2019, more than Rs 15,000 crore had already been spent, in which even a little progress was made.

A new dawn

In 2024, Chandrababu Naidu returned to power with the support of the BJP -led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), bringing Amravati back into the mainstream. His campaign promised the need to honor farmers and institutions continuity, vision and commitments.

Addressing a meeting in Involu village yesterday, Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies Minister Nadandla Manohar assured the villagers and land contributors that Vikas would now be inclined. “The coalition government was formed as a result of the sacrifices of Amravati farmers,” he said, promised the development of all 29 participating villages.

The state government is also monitoring additional land of up to 40,000 acres to expand the Amravati scheme into megasity. The vision involves integrating adjacent municipalities such as Guntur, Vijayawada, Tadpalli and Mangalgiri, supported by advanced transport infrastructure including a railway line, external and internal ring rhodes and an international airport.
