Guwahati:
A royal Bengal tiger, which had been causing panic in the area for weeks, was killed by a mob in Golghat district of Assam and parts of the body were removed, including skin, ears, teeth and legs.
Adults, male tigers, who were found hidden in a paddy ground in Dusudimukh under the Bokakhat subdivision, were surrounded by a crowd of lathi and sharp -armed villagers and were killed on Wednesday. A case has been registered by the Forest Department.
The villagers claimed that the tiger had killed livestock in the area and at the same time they had threatened.
One villager said, “We were living in fear for weeks, but the forest department did not take any serious steps. This tragedy could have been stopped.”
Khumtai MLA Mrina Saikia condemned the murder and called the incident “unfortunate and regrettable”,
He also called for government intervention and emphasized the need for better preparations in handling emergency conditions related to wildlife.
Forest department officials later recovered the body in the presence of a magistrate.
“We have registered a case and the police are identifying those who were part of the crowd,” said an official said.
