Ashok University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who was arrested for a social media post about Operation Sindoor, critics say that is away from objectionable, sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court in Haryana on Tuesday.
One of the lawyers representing Shri Mahmudabad, Kapil Balyan said, “Police sought expansion of their remand for seven days. During arguments, we opposed the expansion of police remand … The court sent him to judicial custody by 27 May.”
Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to challenge his arrest by hearing the petition of Shri Mahmudabad.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who was present for Mr. Mahmudabad, told the court, “He has been arrested for patriotic statement. Please list it.”

The possibility of the court will hear the case on Wednesday.
Two FIRs were lodged against Ashok Professor at Rai Police Station in Sonipat, Haryana – one was based on a complaint on a complaint on the complaint of Haryana State Commission Chairperson, Renu Bhatia President, and a village sarpanch.
Mr. Mahmudabad, the head of the Department of Political Sciences at Ashok University, was arrested by Haryana Police on Sunday from his residence in Delhi. There is allegations against the professor to endanger India’s sovereignty and promote communal disagreement.
The Women’s Commission had earlier said that their comments were disliked for women officials in the Indian Armed Forces.
In response to the arrest on Sunday, Ashok University said in a statement, “We have been informed that Prof. Ali Khan Mahmudabad has been taken into police custody today.
The arrest has criticized opposition leaders.
Congress President Mallikrajun Kharge also condemned the arrest, saying, “The arrest of Ashok University Professor, Ali Khan Mahmudabad shows how frightened the BJP is disliked by him.”
“I have read and read the entire tweet of Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad. In which part of the statement that has been objectionable and violated about the law to the Haryana Police is said? Will someone of Haryana Police tell us?” Asked P Chidambaram of Congress.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took rapid action against Mr. Mahmudabad with a sluggish response against Vijay Shah’s comment against Colonel Sophia Qureshi.
He said on X, “People in power are free even after others speak ill, and those who speak the truth have been arrested.”
