Blessing for some, banned for others

Chennai:

Chennai’s first air -conditioned (AC) suburban train, which rolled on Saturday, has come as a boon for many passengers during peak hours as the city fights with heat due to rising temperatures.

The inauguration of the AC train connecting Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu Corridors was an important episode in the suburban rail network, often seen by many people as the transport lifestyle of the city and its neighborhood.

IT professional Madan said, “This is a great means of defeating summer heat. I used to drive earlier but now, I take the train and be able to work comfortably on my laptop. I think it’s a very good initiative by Railways.”

Made by the Integral Coach Factory in the city, the train is equipped with more features than the regular EMU (electric multiple unit) rake, such as automated doors and passenger information systems. Its space-savings design has a propulsion system under the train, so passengers can move freely from one end to the other.

However, some passengers complained about the absence of any mobile or laptop charging provisions and metal seats.

“I want them to have USB and charging provisions, so that we can charge and work on work. Also, metal seats cool down and can have a problem for ortho patients like me. Cushion seats will be good,” Periyaya, a technology said.

Passengers also flagged expensive fares, which starts at Rs 35 and can increase to Rs 105. “Taking this train is more expensive than taking the metro. Railways should rent. Limited stops also do not give any help to students like me,” Manobala, a college-goer said.

The train takes only three trips a day. Amudh, a government employee working in Fort St. George, said: “Time should be changed according to the inauguration and closing of government offices, so more of us can switch to this mode of transport.”
