Center announces 4% government housing quota for persons with disabilities


New Delhi:

The Center will provide 4 percent reservation for persons with disabilities in the allocation of government houses under the general pool residential housing category.

Under the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, the Directorate of Estates, which allocates accommodation to the eligible central government employees, has issued an office memorandum in this regard.

In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said that the “landmark” step is towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Saba Sixty, Saba Vikas’ towards the inclusive development drawing inspiration.

“While moving forward, 4 percent reservation in allocation of central government housing will be provided to disabled persons, which take adequate steps towards equity, dignity and access in public services.

“This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to the empowerment of every citizen and also strengthens the foundation of an inclusive and accessible India,” the statement said.

In alignment with the rights of individuals with the Disability Act, 2016, the Estate Directorate has issued an office memorandum to ensure proper access to the residential housing of the Central Government for persons with disabilities.

It was also said that Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal has taken a “historic” step towards inclusive rule.
