Chennai Metro tests driverless train at 10 km stretch

Chennai Metro Rail Limited has tested the driverless train at a 10 -km stretch, which is very happy and enthusiastically from the passengers.

On Monday, a test was conducted between Poonamali and Porur Metro stations as part of Phase II project. The line is expected to be open to the public by December.

Earlier, a driverless train was conducted at a stretch of only three kilometers, until Mulai Thottam.

“Extension of tests and tests today is an important milestone in the progress of Phase -2 project of CRML,” said Ma Siddiqui, who is the managing director of the project.

The city already has a 54.1 km long metro rail route. The Rs 63,246 crore ambitious phase 2 project is aimed at adding 118.9 km-Metro line, including more areas including Madhavaram, Shollingonalore, Light House, Poonamleli and Siruseri. The project will have 76.3 km high lines and 42.6 km underground lines.

Phase 1 of the metro connects the airport, Wimco Nagar, St. Thomas Mount and Chennai Central. Daily passenger traffic touches 86.6 lakhs every month.

Phase II project will serve as a boon for millions of Chennaiwites in the densely population of the city, including the IT corridors, homes for thousands of techniques.

Ishwar Ram, a software professional in a Poruro company, said: “When I went to Japan, I saw how people in Tokyo use metro. I would prefer to take a metro to travel to other places like airport.”

Antony, an entrepreneur from the IT Corridor said: “This morning, it took me 90 minutes to drive 21.4 km. The metro would definitely be faster and reliable”.
