In a tragic incident, a 40 -year -old head constable committed suicide with the city police after provoking itself near Taramani MRTS railway station.
The policeman, known as Senthil, was allegedly distracted in an adjacent departmental inquiry into an intoxicated driving accident, which was included last night.
Senthil, a native of Nagapattinam, was linked to the law and order wing of the Taramani police station and resided with his family in the police quarters in Alandur.
According to police sources, on Tuesday night, Senthil, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was driving his car with Maduvankarai flyover, when he hit a two-wheeler.
Rider, Murugson (54) was thrown from the flyover and suffered serious injuries. He was immediately shifted to the government Roypetah Hospital, where he was treated.
After the accident, Senthil allegedly tried to escape from the scene. However, public members followed him and stopped his vehicle near Kathipara flyover. They alerted the police, and reached the spot to the personnel of the Guindi Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW).
After initial inquiry and testing, the authorities confirmed that Senthil was running under the influence of alcohol. The traffic police received a written venture from Senthil, in which he was directed to appear before the TIW for a formal investigation at 11 am on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, videos of the accident and their efforts to escape, recorded by buyers, were widely broadcast on social media platforms, which attracted public attention to the matter.
On Wednesday morning, Senthil reported for duty at Taramani police station. However, before going for scheduled inquiry, he allegedly stopped near Taramani MRTS station. There, he allegedly snatched petrol from his two -wheelers and set himself on fire.
Passengers on the busy artery road saw a terrible scene and immediately alerted fire and rescue services. The firefighters reached the spot and tried to drown the flames. Senthil was rushed to Kilpack Medical College Hospital, but was declared dead.
Senior police officials have started investigating the incident. The city police also expect an internal review to assess the procedural and mental health aid mechanisms for personnel under disciplinary investigation.
