Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Monday that India is ready to convert the ups and downs in the current market into an opportunity, against the backdrop of the mutual tariff imposed by the US.
In his address at the ‘India Global Forum’ here, the minister said that Indian industries need to have nationalism at the core of their work, and look at the current set of challenges to “opportunity”.
“Until we bring to the balance of honest values, we will see that there is more instability in the world,” he said.
On the story of Chinese development, Mr. Goyal said that the foundation of China’s growth was fuel by improper trade practices.
He said, “Meditation is to bring back the pricing of fair sports, goods and services at an honest price. As long as we bring this balance, the world will be in more disturbance,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump “are very good friends”, the minister said, emphasizing the initial conclusion of the US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
Meanwhile, India and the United States said on Monday that both of them wanted a “initial conclusion” of a bilateral trade agreement.
The two countries have intensified negotiations on the agreement after the announcement of a broader levy of different degrees incorporating almost all business partner countries of the US by US President Donald Trump, along with the announcement of 26 percent of mutual tariffs on goods from India.
Foreign Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar wrote in a post on X after a phone call with his American counterpart, State Secretary Marco Rubio, “Indo-Pacific, Indian subcontinent, Europe, Middle East/West Asia and Caribbean were exchanged.”
“Agreed on the importance of the initial conclusion of the bilateral trade agreement,” he went to write in the post, “ready to stay in contact”.
On 2 April, Trump imposed 27 percent tariff on Indian imports.
