Delhi Gig Workers, to set up welfare board for frame schemes

New Delhi:

Delhi Labor Minister Kapil Mishra said on Friday that the government will set up a welfare board for gig and platform workers and will formulate frame schemes for their welfare.

Mr. Mishra said in an official statement that Mr. Mishra presided over a meeting with Gig workers and representatives of major platforms and aggregators, including Swiggi, Zomato, Blinkit, Uber, Arbanclap and Bigbasket.

The session provided a platform to the government and the aggregators to give voice to the government and the aggregators directly. He said that issues such as long -working hours, insufficient payments and the absence of an effective grievance redressal system have been highlighted, which has long influenced their livelihood.

He said, “All these problems will be addressed in collaboration with platforms and aggregators. The government will form a welfare board for gig and platform workers and frames plans for their welfare,” he said.

He also assured platforms and aggregators that they would not face harassment from inspectors or any other officials in any way.

The Delhi government has allocated Rs 10 crore in its financial year 26 budget to support these initiatives, informing the gathering.

The gig economy is one of the fastest growing sectors in India, which currently employs about one crore people across the country.

The statement said that according to NITI Aayog estimates, the figure is estimated to increase by 2029–30 to 2.4 crores.

In Delhi alone, about five million gig and platform workers contribute to this important economic sector, underlining its importance for the development of the region.
