Chennai:
Police said on Friday that an elderly couple was allegedly murdered at his residence in Erode district of Tamil Nadu.
Police said a detailed investigation is going on, but Prima Feshi seems to be a case of robbery as about 10 sovereign gold jewelery was found missing from the house.
The victims were identified as Ramaswamy (75) and his wife Bhakiamal (65). The couple live alone while their children live elsewhere.
On Thursday, the incident of Shivgiri came out after his son repeatedly called the couple. The bodies of the male and the woman were found with injuries.
District Superintendent of Police (SP) Sujath told NDTV, “An investigation is going on. CCTV footage is being scanned. Eight special teams have been formed to crack the case.”
The murder triggered a political line as All India Anna Dravidian Munnetra Kazgam (AIADMK) general secretary and opposition leader Edappdi Palaniswamy hit the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazgam (DMK) government over his failure to maintain the law and order.
Listing the same cases of murder involving the elderly, Mr. Palaniswami said: “Is this law and order?”
Shri Palaniswami’s ally and Bharatiya Janata Party leader K Annamalai also alleged that the state government had failed to keep a check and reduce the rate of such crimes.
Pattali Makkal Kachi leader Abumani Ramdos said that the police do not have to make any arrests in the triple murder case in Tiruppur district in November. “There is a fear among the people,” he said.
There was no immediate comment from DMK but Chief Minister MK Stalin recently said that there is a peaceful situation in the state.
The Tamil Nadu police claimed that the murders have declined since 2021. In 2019, the state registered a maximum of 1,745 murders, but the figure decreased by 1,563 last year.
With the assembly elections held in a year, the opposition is likely to give laws and orders.
