Government of Karnataka started survey of scheduled castes to collect empirical data

Bengaluru:

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Monday that a survey on SC sub-classification in the state has started and will run till 17 May.

The exercise began on Monday.

Addressing a press conference here, the CM said, “Scheduled Castes are being calculated in the state. A person under the leadership of retired High Court Judge, Justice HN Nagamohan Das has been formed.

According to him, the Commission will have to submit its report in 60 days. 100 crore rupees will be spent on exercise and 65,000 teachers will be planted as an enumerator.

Siddaramaiah said that the purpose of this practice was to create empirical data on 101 castes in the SC list.

The second phase of the practice will be held between 19 and 21 May and the designated camps will be held as part for the benefit of those left in the first phase.

The third phase, for online registration, will also begin on May 19, and it will run till 23 May. Those who live outside their towns can use it, Siddaramaiah explained.

He said that the Supreme Court dated 1 August 2024 in the case of Punjab State and others vs. Devendra Singh and others, retained the constitutionality of sub-classification within SCS.

The Chief Minister said, “Based on the order of the apex court, we have formed the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission.”

Siddaramaiah said that some Scheduled Castes have discrepancies. While the accustomed Dravid, etc. are in the ‘left’ category in some places like Karnataka and Adi Andhra, they are in the ‘right’ category at other places.

The Commission will make clear recommendations and prepare empirical data, he explained.

A mobile application has also been developed and a helpline number (94813 59000) has been allocated for this purpose. He appealed to the people of SC communities in the state to come forward and make the practice successful.
