HMD, Lava Tejas Networks, to launch direct-to-mobile phone in partnership with Freestream

HMD announced on Monday that it would launch the Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phone in collaboration with Freestream Technologies and other D2M partners. The announcement was made beyond the upcoming World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (Waves) 2025, which will begin on May 1. Lava International, an Indian OEM, also introduced a D2M feature phone in the country. Some of the major features of the lava handset have been teased by the company. The area test of D2M technology will be held soon.

To work with HMD, Lava Freestream, Cinclair and Tejas Network

In collaboration with HMD, Freestrim Technologies, Tejas Network and Cinclair, India will unveil the Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phone in India during 2025, which will be held at Jio World Center, Mumbai, the company said in a press release on Monday.

The D2M is claimed to be the “next generation broadcast technology”, which distributes OTT as well as live TV, video, audio and text messages directly on mobile phones, without Wi-Fi or internet connectivity. This cooperation is asked to support ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ initiatives in the country. Large -scale field tests of technology starting soon.

HMD also stated that upcoming equipment will be low -cost feature phones, smartphones and tablets that are operated by Tejas Network. Technology is said to have been tested in the live network by Prasar Bharati in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and Tejas Network.

Parag Naik, Executive Vice President of Tejas Network, said the upcoming HMD D2M phone will use SL -3000 chipset of Sankhya Labs and will be equipped with a “core network platform for targeted advertisements, CDN offloads, educational materials, emergency alerts, and more.”

An American telecom firm Cinclair Ink said that the phone would use ATSC 3.0 technology, which has been described as the next generation of digital tereastrial television broadcasting standard. The company is said to have been working on the “The Next version, Broadcast to Avtivating (B2X) technology”, with focus on the 6G needs of the future.

Lava said that its in-house R&D team and Tejas Network have developed a feature phone that runs on MediaTek MT6261 SOC with an integrated SL3000 chip by Sankhya. It will come with a UHF antenna for TV reception, GSM for voice calls, 2.8 -inch QVGA display and 2,200mAh battery.
