“Surat Fire Brigade helped the residents climb the building. Eighteen people, who were trapped on the roof, were also saved. The fire was controlled. No one was injured in the incident,” said Mr. Mavani.
Harsh Sanghvi, Minister of State for Gujarat State, who lives in front of the building, reached the spot and oversee the rescue operation.
A rescued resident said that many people went to the roof to protect themselves from smoke and flames.
“Due to thick smoke, it was impossible to climb the stairs. Thus, we went to the roof. Later, the fire brigade personnel first set fire and then wrapped the wet towels around our face and brought us down,” the resident said.
Shri Sanghvi said that he was jogging in the garden when he saw a fire near his residence.
He said that the fire brigade helped the first 40 residents climb down the stairs before saving others from the roof.
“Many residents of the building are known for me. About 50 fire brigade personnel and five fire vehicles reached this place. They safely vacated 18 persons, who were trapped on the roof. The fire brigade personnel did a commendable job,” said Mr. Sanghavi.
