“I believe India will strengthen American tariff stress”: Hardeep Puri

New Delhi:

Union Minister Hardeep Puri said on Tuesday that he is confident that the India administration would be stronger than the result of the tariff, when the bilateral trade agreement between the two partner countries would be finalized.

“I am confident that India would do a great job under a very competent and intelligent leader like the Prime Minister and his team,” he told reporters that when the business partners were asked to react to President Trump’s mutual tariff.

Since assuming positions for his second term, President Trump has reiterated his stance on tariff mutation, stressing that the United States will match the tariffs imposed by other countries including India to ensure proper trade. Facing Trump’s mutual tariffs, some countries raised additional tariffs on American goods, extending trade tension. However, India has avoided any such step as the two countries are actively working on a trade agreement.

He said, “We will be stronger than this. Every challenge presents an opportunity, and India will take advantage of it.”

Earlier, on Monday, US State Secretary Marco Rubio and Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed the US tariff on India after the announcement of President Donald Trump last week, which was about putting a 10 percent tariff on all imports to America, which caused concern in the global market. The US has imposed 26 percent tariffs on Indian imports.

The purpose of this discussion was to move towards a fair and balanced business relationship, as the US State Department spokesman Tami Bruce said.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to America, leaders of the two countries resolved to deepen the US-India trade relationship to promote development, which ensure fairness, national security and employment generation. To end this, the leaders set a bold new target for bilateral trade-“Mission 500”-2030 targets the total bilateral trade more than 500 billion USD.

Shortly thereafter, in early March, India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was in America. After this, the first installment of the Multi-Regional Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) was interacted until the collapse of 2025 after Trump-Modi’s plans. The two leaders committed to nominate senior representatives to pursue these dialogues.

In addition, speaking about the availability of energy in global markets, Minister Hardeep Puri, who keeps petroleum portfolio, said that there is enough crude oil available in the market.

Talking about India, he said that for years, the country has diversified its crude oil sourcing in 40 countries. He also highlighted India’s exploration and production efforts to meet his energy demand.
