New Delhi:
India staged a strong protest with Canada on the “threatened language” and “unacceptable imagination” at a parade held in Toronto on Monday.
The promotion and imagination of Khalistan, who allegedly attacked Indian leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was depicted in swimming in the parade on Sunday.
Official sources said that India staged a protest with Canadian High Commission in New Delhi at the parade.
“We expressed our concerns to the Canadian High Commission about the parade held in Toronto, where unacceptable imagination and threatening language was used against our leadership and Indian citizens living in Canada,” said one of the sources.
Sources said that the Indian side again called upon Canadian officials to work against “anti-India elements”, which are spreading hatred and advocating extremism and a separatist agenda.
The source said, “We once again asks Canadian officials to work against anti-India elements, who advocated hatred and advocate extremism and separatist agenda,” the source said.
The latest episode of tension in relations between the two countries came a few days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s victory in the general election.
Carney, an economist and political newcomer, led the Liberal Party for his remarkable victory in the elections held under the shadow of Tariff Clash by US President Donald Trump.
His victory was seen as an opportunity to repair the Indo-Canada relations under severe stress during the Prime Minister of Justin Trudeau.
Relations between India and Canada saw a major decline after Trudeau’s allegations in September 2023, which was a “potential” participation of Indian agents in the murder of Hardip Singh Nijar on Canadian Earth. New Delhi strongly rejected Trudeau’s allegations as “absurd”.
Ottawa linked several Indian diplomats of Ottawa to many Indian diplomats, including high commissioner Sanjay Verma, to the killing of Nizar.
Last October, India withdrew Verma and five other diplomats. India also expelled a similar number of Canadian diplomats from New Delhi.
In the last few months, security authorities from India and Canada resumed the contact and both sides were looking at the possibility of appointing new high commissioners.
The exit of Trudeau was seen as an opportunity to improve bilateral relations.
India accused Trudeau’s government of allowing Khalistani elements to function from Canadian earth.
After Trudeau exiting, New Delhi said it expects to rebuild relationships with Canada based on “Mutual Trust and Sensitivity”.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jiswal said in March, “The recession in India-Canada relations was due to the license that was given to extremist and separatist elements in that country.”
