India welcomed the UK’s decision to hand over Mauritius to Chagos Islands


New Delhi:

India on Thursday welcomed the UK’s decision to hand over the sovereignty of the Chagos islands, including the tropical Atol of Mauritius from Diego Garcia under a historic deal.

Britain is leaving the rights of islands after more than 50 years.

Under the agreement, the UK will have full responsibility for the protection of Diego Garcia located strategically.

In its response, India stated that it has consistently supported the “valid claim” of Mauritius on the Chagos Islands keeping in mind the “dicolonization, respect for sovereignty, and the regional integrity of nations,” the “legitimate claim” of Mauritius on the Chagos Islands.

We welcome signing the treaty between the UK and Mauritius on the return of Mauritius sovereignty on the Chagos Islands including Diego Garcia, Diego Garcia, Ministry of External Affairs (Mea).

“Through this bilateral treaty, the formal resolution of the Chagos dispute for a long time is a milestone achievement and a positive development for the region,” it said in a statement.

“It is ahead for the understanding between the two sides who arrived in October 2024, and marks the culmination of the process of disintegration of Mauritius in the spirit of international law and rule-based order,” the MEA said.

It has been said that India is committed to working closely with Mauritius and other similar -ideology countries to strengthen marine security and regional stability and ensure peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.
