New Delhi:
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the BrahMos Aerospace integration and testing facility in Lucknow on Sunday. The state-of-the-art unit is built under the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor, including six major nodes-Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi and Chitrakoot.
The Lucknow unit will gather and test the existing supersonic Brahmos cruise missiles and also produce lighter, next generation (NG) variants that will dramatically promote India’s exact stroke capabilities from land, air and sea.
What is Brahmos?
BrahMos is a universal accurate-stroke missile that can be launched from land, sea and air platforms. It is designed for day and night operations in all weather conditions. With multi-rub, multi-target and multi-platform abilities, BrahMos has acquired a true force multiplier on the modern battlefield. It has gone through more than 100 successful test firing.
About BrahMos production unit
This feature is designed for the manufacture of 80 to 100 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles annually and will later be scalled to produce 100 to 150 next generation variants each year.
It has been developed by BrahMos Aerospace, which is a joint venture between India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya (Scientific Production Association of Machine-Manufacture).

Unit will produce missiles with a range of 290 to 400 km and flying at a top speed of Mach 2.8 (about 3,430 km per hour).
The BrahMos missile uses a “fire and mistake” guidance system for high precision strike, IANS reported.
The version of the next generation Brahmas is quite light at 1,290 kg (below 2,900 kg), enabling fighter jets such as Sukhoi SU -30 MKI to carry up to three missiles instead of only one.
Inside the convenience and what it provides
The missile unit has been constructed by the Uttar Pradesh government at a cost of Rs 300 crore on 80 hectares of land.
The foundation stone for convenience was laid in 2021, and the entire project was completed in just three and a half years of short interval.
The Lucknow unit will also keep the Titanium and super alloy material plant, known as officially known as the strategic material technology complex, to produce important aerospace-grade materials for defense systems.
A separate feature – Defense Test Infrastructure System (DTIS) – its foundation stone will also be laid during the incident. DTI will serve as a dedicated hub to test and certify a wide range of defense products.
The corridor was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2018 global investors summit.
After Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, a dedicated defense is the second state to establish the corridor.
