Justice Bela M Trivedi performed the office on Friday after serving more than three and a half years in the Supreme Court of India. The court paid tribute on its last day, including senior advocate and an old case from Kapil Sibal, head of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
“This court is a planetarium of stars, and you are one of them,” said Mr. Sibal. “Just think about it, you are the 11th woman judge in this court. In 75 years of this country, a woman judge was appointed every seven years. It is a great milestone itself.”
Mr. Sibal recalled the moment of a court that stayed with him. A person was prosecuted under strict anti -terrorism illegal activities (UAPA) Act (UAPA) in a person, Mr. Sibal had argued for the transfer of a person from Karnataka to Kerala. Justice Trivedi ruled against the request.
“Out of a hump, I said,” I hope your lidy will be some sympathy. ” Your Ladeship then said, “You don’t know me,” Mr. Sibal remembered. “Okay, you knew you before coming here. And after you go here we will know you. Thank you very much for what you have done. I don’t think any judge in this court bends for a popular spirit.”

Justice Trivedi’s departure was not without controversy. The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) selected the tradition to not organize a farewell ceremony for Justice Trivedi. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, presiding over the formal bench, did not hide his disappointment.
“I should openly designate, as I clearly believe in speaking … the association (SCBA) should not have any such stand,” said Chief Justice Gawai.
The CJI thanked Kapil Sibal and SCBA Vice President Rachana Srivastava for participating in the ceremonial bench despite the resolution of the association.
He said, “I am grateful to Kapil Sibal and Rachna Srivastava, both are here. But the stand taken by the association, I should openly designate … On such an occasion, such a stand should not be taken by the association,” he said. “Therefore, I am openly appreciating Sibal and Srivastava for their appearance. Despite their body’s solution, they are here. But what has been lost by the association, the presence of a full house here is here, suggests that he is a very good judge. There are different types of judges.
Justice Trivedi started in July 1995 as a trial court judge in Ahmedabad and arose through the rank of the judiciary to reach the Supreme Court of the country. She reached the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021 as a part of a historic step, with nine judges, including three women, was sworn in in a single day.
Born on 10 June 1960 in Patan, Gujarat, Justice Trivedi practiced law for a decade before entering the judicial service. In 1995, he was appointed as a judge of the City Civil and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad. A remarkable footnote in his early judicial career was that his father was a judge in the same court, which entered the Limca Book of Indian Records in the category of “Father-Material Judges” in the same court.
