Bengaluru (karnataka):
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Monday that the state will census the Scheduled Castes (SCS) from May 5 to 17, and will collect detailed population data of all SC sub-costs in the state.
The state government has formed a single-member commission, headed by retired High Court Judge Nagamohan Das, which is to collect empirical data on 101 castes within the category of Scheduled Castes.
Speaking at the press conference, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “We have started a caste-wise census of Scheduled Castes today. Justice Nagamohan Das is leading the Commission who is leading the Commission to provide an accurate report for internal reservation.
He said that like one by the Sadashiv Commission, previous reports used old data from the 2011 census, which lacked clarity on the distribution of sub-castes. “Some people wrote only in forms to SC, but did not specify if they belong to left or right -handed groups. For example, Adi Dravid and Adi Karnataka are listed in both ways. This confusion is difficult to implement internal reservation impartially.”
The Chief Minister said that after the Supreme Court’s decision on August 1, 2024, the states have been empowered to make internal reservation between SC. Based on that, the state has worked to collect fresh, accurate and detailed data.
“To ensure that the data is accurate, we have trained teachers and enumerators. Around 65,000 teachers are included in the door-to-door surveys,” he said. Supervisors will look after every 10 to 12 enumerators to ensure quality and stability.
Additionally, from May 19 to May 20, special camps will be organized for those who missed the door-to-door survey. People can make the details of their caste online online by May 23.
The Chief Minister said, “This data will help us ensure appropriate internal reservation among the Scheduled Castes based on real population data.”
