Protests against the revised Waqf Act continue in Manipur and thousands of men and children of thousands of men participated in rallies in Imphal East on Tuesday.
People from three major Muslim pockets participated in protest in Khumidok Bazaar-Haikrumkong area related to two assembly constituencies (Kurai and Hingang AC) related to Kayrang, Khabisoi and Kurai Khumidok.
The protesters formed human chains, raised slogans against the bill and organized a rally.
Protester Tayyabur Rahman said that a personal attack against BJP Minority Front president Oscar Ali is condemnable.
He said that the members of the community are angry with the passage of the bill and the democratic forms of the protest will continue until the bill is canceled, he said.
In addition to Imphal East, continuous protests against the bill are being told from separate Muslim pockets, including Thubal and Bishanupur.
Last week, an angry mob held the house of BJP minority cell chief Mohammad Askar Ali in Lillong in Thubal district.
Officers had to climb curfew in parts of Lillong. Oscar Ali later publicly apologized for damaging the spirit of the community.
Bill – Before passed by Parliament – was challenged in the Supreme Court. About 15 petitions have been filed, which will be heard by the apex court next week.
After being passed by Parliament, the Waqf Amendment Bill came into force on the weekend and was signed by the President. On Wednesday and Thursday, the marathon was passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha after a debate.
The government has repeatedly underlined that law is about property and its management, not religion.
The Waqf Bill was declared by the BJP, developed after consulting a large part of the people and has received the support of non-Muslim minorities.
