CJI Gawai, who took oath of the new office on 14 May, was in Mumbai for a felicitation program.

Responding to a question on the absence of senior officials during the visit, the cabinet minister told reporters in Nagpur that CJI Gawai, who lives in Amravati district of the state, was Bhushan (Jewel) of Maharashtra.

“Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gawai is Maharashtra Bhushan, Amravati and Nagpur Bhushan for us. It was a happy moment for us when he took over as CJI,” said Bawankule.

The minister said, “I personally called CJI Bhushan Gawai and apologized to the government on the night yesterday (Sunday). He has a big heart. He comes from Amravati and will definitely forgive us,” the minister said.
