Major terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir since 2000

The attack on 26 people in Pahalgam on Tuesday is the largest target tourist this year, and comes amid the resolution of the government to end terrorism in the union region. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that resolution before leaving for Srinagar this evening.

In a post on social media platform X, Mr. Shah said, “Terrorist attack on tourists in Pahgam, Jammu and Kashmir. My views are with the family members of the deceased. People involved in this deserted work of terror will not be spared, and we will come down very low with disturbing results”.

  • March 21, 2000: Terrorists targeted a minority Sikh community in Chattinginghpora village in Anantnag district, killing 36 people.
  • August 2000: Thirty -two people, 24 of them were bound to Amarnath, killed in a terrorist attack at Nanwan Base Camp.
  • July 2001: Amarnath Yatris again targeted, this time at the Shashanag base camp in Anantnag, 13 died.
  • October 1, 2001: A suicide attack in the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature Complex in Srinagar, killing 36 people.
  • 2002: Terror was killed in Chandanwari base camp, where 11 Amarnath pilgrims were killed.
  • November 23, 2002: Nine-nineteen people, including nine security forces personnel, three women and two children, lost their lives in an instantaneous explosive equipment explosion at Lower Munda in South Kashmir on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
  • March 23, 2003: Terrorists massacred at least 24 Kashmiri Pandits including 11 women and two children in Nandimarg village of Pulwama district.
  • June 13, 2005: Thirteen citizens, including two school children and three CRPF officers, were killed, and more than 100 people were hurt when an explosive car flown into a crowded market in Pulwama.
  • September 18, 2016: Four Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists attacked the Indian Army Brigade Headquarters in Uri. Nineteen soldiers were killed and 30 others were injured.
  • July 10, 2017: Attack on Amarnath Yatra bus in Kulgam, 8 killed.
  • 15 February 2019: A convoy of vehicles carrying security personnel was attacked by a suicide bomber in Lathpora on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Pulwama district. Forty soldiers were killed.
