Guwahati:
Two jail guards in Assam’s Sribhumi district have been arrested for allegedly a young, homeless woman who is mentally challenged, and in the district jail premises and for gang rape.
The woman was allegedly dragged in the jail premises at 1.30 am on Saturday and two jail guards, also known as wards, were caught by a patrol.
Police said that the accused, Harishwar Kalita and Gajendra Kalita, are between 45 and 50 years of age. They are from Punjabari and Borgaon regions of Guwahati respectively.
An official said, “Both men have been arrested and further investigation is on. The victim, who has been mentally challenged, has been admitted to the hospital. It is suspected that she was alone on the road and the accused took advantage of it.”
He said that both people will soon be produced in court.
“Once we were informed, a team reached the spot and the accused was taken into custody. A case has been registered,” said Pranabjoti Kalita, Additional Superintendent of Police, Sribhumi.
