The Meteorological Department of India said that the South -West monsoon advanced on Tuesday in Bengal’s South Bay, South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands and some areas of the Northern Andaman Sea.

The Meteorological Department said that in the last two days, Nicobar Islands received heavy rains.

During this period, the strength and depth of the winds entering the Bengal, Nicobar Islands and the south bay of the Andaman Sea, extends up to 4.5 km in the wind speed and depth, more than 20 km above sea level and 4.5 km in some areas.

Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR), an indicator of clouded, also decreased in the region. These conditions fulfilled the criteria of the onset of monsoon in the region, said this.

The Meteorological Office stated that conditions are favorable for the monsoon to move forward in more parts of the South Arabian Sea, Maldives and Comorin region; More areas of South Bay of Bengal; The entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands; The remaining part of the Andaman Sea; And in the next three to four days, parts of the central Gulf of Bengal. The primary rainfall bearing system is likely to reach Kerala on 27 May, before the general date of June 1.

If the monsoon arrives in Kerala as expected, it will start first on the Indian mainland since 2009, when it began on 23 May, according to the IMD data.

Generally, the South -West monsoon makes its debut on Kerala by 1 June and covers the entire country by 8 July. It begins to withdraw from Northwest India around 17 September and withdraw completely by 15 October.

In April, IMD forecasts the common cumulative rainfall during the 2025 monsoon season, which fulfills the possibility of El Nino conditions, which are associated with normal rainfall in the Indian subcontinent.

The monsoon is important for India’s agricultural sector, which supports livelihood of about 42 percent of the population and contributes about 18 percent to the country’s GDP. It is also important to recreate important reservoirs for drinking water and power generation across the country.
