Chief Justice Bra Gavai has criticized the Supreme Court Bar Association for not bid farewell to 11th women judge Justice Bela M Trivedi in the history of the apex court.

New Delhi:

India’s Chief Justice Bra Gavai on Friday criticized the stand taken by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for not bid farewell to Justice Bela M. Trivedi.

Presiding over a formal bench organized to honor Justice Trivedi, the eleventh female judge was elevated in the Supreme Court in her 75 -year history, who left the office on Friday, Chief Justice Gawai said she said “openly” removed the stand.

“Stand taken by the association, I should openly designate because I believe in being plain and straight,” he said.

“On such an occasion, such a stand-out was not taken by the association,” he said.

Chief Justice Gawai, however, appreciated the presence of SCBA President Kapil Sibal and Vice President Rachna Srivastava.

“I am grateful to Mr. Kapil Sibal and Ms. Rachna Srivastava. They are here … Despite their body’s solution, they are here. But what has been lost by the association, the presence of a full house here is here, it suggests that he is a very good judge. He is a different type of judge.

Chief Justice Gawai said that Justice Trivedi has always been “fair” and is known for her “hard work and integrity”.

“Justice Trivedi, you have been a valuable property for our judiciary. As you are involved in a new journey, I wish you all the best,” he said.

Justice Trivedi, who would have removed the office on 9 June 2025, marked his last day due to a personal commitment on Friday.

He was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on 31 August 2021, when a record nine new judges, including three women, were administered the oath of office.

Justice Trivedi had a rare pride of being elevated in the apex court after starting as a judge of the trial court in Gujarat in July 1995. She was part of several historical decisions of the apex court.

Born on 10 June 1960 in Patan, Gujarat, Justice Trivedi practiced as a lawyer in the Gujarat High Court for nearly 10 years.

He was appointed as a judge of the Civil and Sessions Court of the city in Ahmedabad in 1995.

He served in various positions like Registrar Vigilance in the High Court and Law Secretary in the Government of Gujarat. He was elevated as a judge of the Gujarat High Court in 2011.
