The Delhi government will now charge hotels and big businesses based on sewage discharge instead of water meter reading. It aims to curb water theft and recover lost revenue
New Delhi:
The Delhi government said that Delhi’s hotels, shopping malls, banquet halls, private hospitals and other large commercial installations will now be billed on the basis of sewage, which has been said by the Delhi government, based on the amount of discharge instead of traditional water meter reading.
Sources said that over the years, many major commercial establishments in Delhi have been using water without paying the right fee. This system of rear calculations will enable the government to curb water theft and recover lost revenue that runs in hundreds of crores.
Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said that the government does not have any accurate data on water consumption of many of these commercial institutions. Many do not even have legal water connections or functional meters.
The minister said, “Every drop will now be calculated. The more sewage you release, the more you will pay for water. Using public resources, the free ride for crores of people is over,” the minister said.
He said, “This is not a tax. It is a question of responsibility. You cannot run a large -scale profit and give anything on free public water. It will no longer be tolerated.”
The government clarified that this rule would apply only to commercial violations. Residential buildings will not have any effect.
