P Chidambaram on Tavavur Rana extradition

New Delhi:

The extradition of 26/11 Plotter Tavavur Rana from the US has provoked a political line, the Congress claimed that the process started during the UPA rule in 2009 and hence the NDA government should not claim all credit.

Former Union Minister P Chidambaram said in a statement today, “Let the facts be clear: The Modi government did not start this process, nor did it secure any new success. It only benefited from mature, consistent and strategic diplomacy.”

“This extradition is not the result of any grandeur, it is a will that the Indian state can achieve what the Indian state can achieve when diplomacy, law enforcement, and international cooperation honestly and without any type of chest,” The statement said that Rana and prominent accused since 2009, David Coalman said. When asked about the matter this evening, Mr. Chidambaram stood by his statement. He told NDTV in a special interview, “They (NDA government) can take credit for what he has done now. But he should also give credit to the previous government that has done a lot. The Government of India is a continuity.”

The counter-terraler equipment was very weak then, Mr. Chidambaram told NDTV, stating what has changed between then and now.

“We did not have an NIA, we did not have the NIA Act, the UAPA had weaknesses, and the intelligence set-up had weaknesses. So in three years I was the Home Minister, I tried my best to plug the equipment and strengthen the weaknesses.” “I do not deny that the present government has created it and strengthened the equipment,” he said.

It indicates that “the terrorist is always half step ahead of the administration,” he said it depends on the administration that the equipment should be reviewed from time to time.

Rana, 64, was extradited from the US yesterday. He landed in Dehi this evening and landed in Delhi, the most wanted for his role in 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, India. He was extradited from the US on a special flight on Wednesday and will now face the law.

In its statement today, the National Investigation Agency mentioned that Rana’s extradition took place “after years of continuous and concrete efforts to bring major conspirators for the devastation of 2008”.

Tavavur Rana was extradited from America On Wednesday, on a special flight, landed in Delhi this evening. He has been formally arrested by the NIA and produced in court.

Mr. Chidambaram – a senior advocate – said that the case with “dedicated Public Prosecutor and A Dutable Judge” should not be taken for more than six months, as India already has all evidence against him.
