Every year on 14 April, India observes Ambedkar Jayati in memory of Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. It is observed as a public holiday in many Indian states and is marked by processions, seminars and cultural programs.
Born on 14 April 1891 in the military cantonment city of MHOW in Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Ambedkar was a huge person in Indian history – a reputed jurist, economist, social reformer and political leader. As the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, he headed the drafting committee and later served as the Minister of Law and Justice in the cabinet of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Dr. Ambedkar’s early life was marked with discrimination, yet he became the first Dalit to receive a doctorate in economics abroad. A graduate at Columbia University and an alumnus of London School of Economics, he was a staunch lawyer of education as a tool of empowerment. He is also recognized for his lifetime conflict for the empowerment of Scheduled Castes.
