New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the country’s first vertical -Lift C Bridge – New Pambon Bridge – country’s first vertical -LIFT C bridge in Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Ram Navami.
PM Modi also flagged off a coast guard ship – which passed under the bridge – and the new Rameswaram -Tamberam (Chennai) train.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the 2.07 km-Lumba bridge, spread to Pock Strait in Tamil Nadu, stands as a will for the development of engineering provu and visionary infrastructure in India.
Located in Ramanathapuram district, the bridge connects Rameswaram Island to the mainland with Mandapam. Built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of over Rs 700 crore – A Navratna PSU -bridge under the Ministry of Railways has a period of 72.5 meters of sailor which can be raised vertically 17 meters, allowing ships to safely pass down.
The bridge can also support two railway tracks, although it currently operates on the same line. It has been cleaned for the speed of 80 kmph train and is designed to handle increased rail traffic and heavy loads.
According to a government release, New Bridge has an estimated lifetime of 100 years.
It is manufactured with special engineering techniques that reduce the need for frequent maintenance, and use stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, high-grade protective paint and a polysiloxen coating to protect them from rust in rigid sea environment.
The Pambon Bridge is being compared to famous people such as the Golden Gate Bridge in the USA, the Tower Bridge in the UK and the Oresand Bridge between Denmark and Sweden due to its modern design and technology.
The old Pambon Bridge was built in 1914 by British engineers. This manually used the duration of the scherzer operated schoerzer (a type of rolling lift bridge). The pass for rail traffic was closed due to security concerns.
PM Modi, who arrived in Tamil Nadu after a three -day visit to Sri Lanka, will soon do a puja at the Ramanathswamy temple in Rameswaram and then lay the foundation stone of various rail and road projects worth more than Rs 8,300 crore in the state.

Ram Sethu, also known as Adams Bridge, is a series of shoals connecting India and Sri Lanka. It extends 48 km between the island of Rameswaram, away from the south -side coast of India, which connects the island of Mannar in Sri Lanka. It distinguishes the Gulf of Mannar (South), an inlet from an inlet in the Bay of Bengal, from the pock straight (North).
