According to a press release, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the ‘Visinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Cottage’ on May 2, Rs 8,900 crore.
According to the release, it is the country’s first dedicated container transmission port, which represents the transformational progress being made as part of the integrated vision of India developed in the maritime field of India.
Release states that the Vizinjam Port, which is strategically important, has been identified as a major priority project that will contribute to strengthen India’s position in global trade, increase logistics efficiency and reduce dependence on foreign ports for cargo transmission. Meanwhile, Kerala port minister VN Vasavan addressed a media briefing before the commission of Vijinjam International Cottage on Wednesday, which is to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 11:00 am on 2 May.
In the presence of State Ministers V Shivkutty, GR Anil, and Thiruvananthapuram Arya Rajendran, Minister Vasavan announced the list of dignitaries invited at the commission ceremony.

“Our nation is going to be an unforgettable moment witness. On May 2 at 11 am, Prime Minister Vijinjam International Port will do the Commission of International Port.
Highlighting the operating achievements of the port before commissioning, Vasavan said, “The port started its test in July 2024 and obtained its commission certificate on 3 December. So far, 285 ships have arrived, crossing the expectations even before the formal commissioning.
“On the capacity and future of the port, Vasavan said,” Visinjam can handle 30 million TEUS (equivalent to twenty feet) annually, and based on current functions, even 45 million TEUs are possible. “Minister Vasavan further explained that construction will be completed ahead of time.
Addressing funding concerns, Vasavan said, “Initially, the Center insisted on providing VGF (viability gap funding) as a loan. Despite repeated requests from the state, including the Chief Minister, the stance did not remain unchanged. Therefore, we soon prepared the required form as a loan. For the next stages of development, we soon prepared as a loan.”
He denied the speculation of political conflict, saying, “There is no conflict between the Center and the state. The central and state government advertisements will appear separately. It is being inaugurated as part of the annual ceremonies of the Kerala government-stating that it is not a CPI (M) -BJP project; it is a joint effort;”
Commenting on the partnership with the opposition, Vasavan said, “Will the opposition participate, it is yet to be confirmed. The project has accepted the contributions made during the Oomon Chandy government. While the Left did not agree to the original agreement, the actual construction began during the LDF tenure.
