“Provoke riots for politics, Waqf Act will not implement”: Mamta Banerjee

Kolkata:

Waqf (Amendment) Act Will not be implemented in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday amid violent protests in the state. Ms. Banerjee said that the law was made by the Center, and it should be sought.

“My honesty is an appeal to people of all religions, please be calm, be restrained. Do not engage in any incredible behavior in the name of religion. Every human life is precious, instigate riots for politics. Those who are provoking riots are harming the society,” he said in a post on X.

Several vehicles, including police vans, were set on fire, stones were hurt in security forces, and violence was stopped during the protest against the new law on Friday.

CM said, “Remember, we did not make the law on which many people are excited. The law was made by the Central Government. So the answer you want should be sought from the Central Government.”

“We have clarified our position on the matter – we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. So what is about the riot,” he asked.

Ms. Banerjee said that legal action will be taken against those who provoke riots.

“We do not condemn any violent activity. Some political parties are trying to misuse religion for political gains. Do not give their persuasion,” he said.

“I think religion means humanity, goodwill, civilization and harmony. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace and harmony,” he said.
