Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday clarified that his comment on the India-Pakistan struggle was made as “Indian and a proud citizen”, and did not reflect the party’s official stand.
Speaking to reporters, the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala also expressed ignorance on the reports that a part of Congress leaders realized that he “Laxman Rekha – a metaphor that arises in the Ramayana,” Seema “means – through his repeated comments on the struggle.
“It seems that people think I have knowledge on some of these subjects. So they come and ask me my thoughts. And I make it very clear, sometimes clearly and sometimes inherently, that I am expressing my personal views as an Indian, as a proud citizen, as a proud citizen,” Mr. Tharur said to reporters.
Asked about the views of some Congress leaders that they had crossed their border, he said: “I don’t know where it comes from. I was in a closed door meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). I started at 4.30pm for the meeting till 6.35 pm, which was not known at that time that I would not react to it.”
He said: “I do not see much point in reacting to something, out of which there has been no official communication of any kind, nor any discussion that I was part of it.”

Sources said that at a CWC meeting on Wednesday, some leaders said that Mr. Tharoor had crossed the “Laxman Rekha” with his repeated comments on the India-Pakistan struggle. “We are a Democratic party and people keep expressing their opinion, but this time, Mr. Tharoor has crossed Lakshman rekha“One of them said.
Mr. Tharoor also said that “in my mind, it was only a contribution to a very important national discourse at a time, when it was clearly important for us to rally around the flag, especially internationally”.
“There was a relative drawback of our approach, especially Europe, Middle East, America and so on. The stations of those countries contacted me, I felt that it is my duty to tell my point to tell me that I correctly show my understanding of what India believes and what does and what he does,” he said.
He said that he has no access to any classified information on the struggle. He said, “I am giving my personal opinion, who has been looking as a person who has been looking at the world’s affairs for a very long time. It is about it. People fully welcome to reject my vision completely, this is my perspective, all this, all that I believe that I am entitled,” he said.
Mr. Tharoor also said that his party’s ally and spokesperson, Jayer Ramesh, is correct saying that there is no communication in earlier communication.
“He is right. He is absolutely correct. I made it clear that I am not a party spokesperson. I am not a spokesperson of the government,” he said.
Mr. Tharoor recalled all the support of the Congress to the Center on India-Pakistan tension.
“Don’t forget that my own party announced complete solidarity with the government and the armed forces at the beginning of this struggle …” he said.
Recently in a media briefing, Mr. Ramesh was asked about Mr. Tharoor’s comments on India-Pakistan tension in recent interviews. “This is his opinion. When Mr. Tharoor speaks, this is his idea and it is not the party’s stand,” he said.
